Seafarers' Dilemma: When Ends Don't Justify Means

"God sees everything."

The end does not justify the means.

"Okay, God does not see things. He does not see what I am doing. I will just keep on sinning. He has forgotten me. I am ashamed of people who will watch and judge me. I am not loved. I need to be clean in front of him."

Those lines are most commonly heard from people who struggle with bad habits, rejection, anxiety, trauma, and depression. Those words come from evil and not from God.

Sometimes, we do sinful things like gossiping, cheating, adultery, watching pornography, lying, and deceiving just to achieve our selfish desires.

We sometimes forget the fact that God is watching over us no matter what we do to cover ourselves with anything. Similar to what occurred when Adam and Eve ate the fruit that God had forbidden in the Garden of Eden.

When they succumbed to the devil's temptation and realized what they had done was wrong, they hid from God, which resulted in their expulsion from paradise. It goes to say that the end does not justify the means.

Ethical Decision-Making on the High Seas

Every sinful action that we take has consequences, and we can't avoid them, no matter how hard we try to hide our secrets from Him.

Gossiping our crewmate may make us feel good in the moment but ultimately it can lead to division and distrust among the crew and damage the relationships we have built.

Belittling others because of their position, appearance, and preference may feel good and may not have immediate consequences, but it can create a toxic environment that affects everyone on board in the long run.

Have we considered the ethical implications of our actions at sea? Are the short-term gains worth the potential long-term consequences?

And sometimes the devil whispers to us, "Yes, it's nice. You have to be frank and say anything. You are here on Earth to do everything you want because it feels good."

But let us just spare some time to have an introspection and ask ourselves, " Does God see this? Does it have any consequences?"

Then the absolute answer to that is, "Yes!" God sees everything, and every action we take has its consequences.

Proverbs 5:21–23 (Good News Translation):

“The Lord sees everything you do. Wherever you go, he is watching. The sins of the wicked are a trap; they get caught in the net of their own sin. They die because they have no self-control. Their utter stupidity will send them to their graves.” 1(“Proverbs 5:21-23”)

Let us always keep in mind our mortality and we are only temporary residents of this world. that God sent us into the world because we are His children to serve Him, and if we have sinned, we should seek His forgiveness and surrender every single thing to Him, even our dirty little secrets.

By seeking His forgiveness and guidance, we open ourselves to the light of His grace and love, finding solace in His presence.

We aren't alone in this journey, because He will send His angels and some random people—that could be family, friends, or even our other half—to serve as guides and support along the way.

Remember, we are never truly alone when we have God by our side.

Colossians 3:23–24 (New International Version):

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.” 2(“Colossians 3:23-24 (NIV)”)

Let us live with self-discipline, decency, and integrity, and serve the Lord God with all our hearts, for He has sent us to Earth for a greater purpose.

Practice empathy and treat our crewmates with kindness and respect, creating a supportive environment by offering help, encouragement, and understanding.

Our actions serve as a testament to our faith in God. By setting a positive example through our deeds, we inspire and guide others in upholding His teachings at sea.

Let's strive to be good people and servants of God, because He will reward us with blessings if we do so.

Remember that "the end does not justify the means." Let us not waste the freedom that He has given us. Every action we take has consequences.

We can't afford to commit sinful acts to achieve human desires.

If we do good things, the results will be good, and if we do otherwise, the results will be bad. Then we suffer. It is important to always strive to do what is right and good in the eyes of God.

God forgives us every time we sin, but that doesn't mean that we continue to do sinful things.

But if we have sinned, continue to ask for his forgiveness.

In moments of difficulty at sea, God's mercy shines through. By exemplifying compassion and integrity, we can guide others with grace and wisdom, fostering a culture of understanding and respect. As much as possible, surrender everything to him.

Let us ask for His guidance every single day before, during, and after work. By seeking His guidance daily, we can navigate moral dilemmas at sea with clarity and conviction, ensuring that our actions reflect His divine purpose and principles.

Trust in His plan and have faith that He will guide us in the right direction. Remember that God sees you, and His love is unconditional, and His mercy knows no bounds.

Let us avoid sin, because doing bad things does not justify the end result.
